5G smartphones have at least 4 antennas. Some of these antennas will be used to transmit and receive while others are receive only. In case the transmitting antenna is blocked (by a hand or head), the smartphone will swap the transmit signal with a transfer switch to an antenna which is not blocked. This antenna swapping architecture has proven very effective, however the antenna transfer switch creates loss in the signal path. This loss grows with impedance mismatch and temperature.
