All LTE smartphones have at least 2 antennas, called Main and Diversity. The main antenna is used for transmit and receive, the diversity antenna us used for receive only. Many smartphones enable antenna swapping to reverse the roles of the two antennas. This allows the phone to compensate for environmental factors, such as the users head or hand, and avoid dropped calls. This antenna swapping architecture has proven very effective, however the antenna transfer switch creates some loss in the signal path. This loss grows with impedance mismatch and temperature.
