In addition to antenna tuning and impedance matching, other devices and functions within the radio front end of mobile devices can also benefit from Cavendish Kinetics’s RF tuning devices and expertise.

For instance, broadband power amps (PAs) can have improved efficiency over several different frequencies, which enables phones to support many more frequency bands without having a distinct PA for each band. CK’s technology provides dense variable capacitance in a small area with high linearity and Q factor – all of which are critical for building broadband tunable PAs.

In addition, high-performance tunable filters are under development in partnership between CK and other industry leaders. CK’s technology allows for very high Q devices, which enable low insertion loss for filters. Because the movable plate capacitors are locked into a fixed position for each capacitance state, the devices can handle high power without loss of linearity or accuracy. The small step size – as low as a few femtofarads – allows for precise tuning in demanding applications.
